Basement Waterproofing Company in Wisconsin Remembers Flood Damage

As natural disasters are becoming all the more prevalent in our volcanic erupting, earthquake shaking and tsunami hitting generation, Badger Basement Systems cannot seem to forget the 2008 flooding in Wisconsin. As much of the United States experienced torrential rains that year, Wisconsin was in need of a recovery and the government and local businesses had to step up to the challenge of re-establishing the dry, habitable beauty back to Wisconsin.

Although the disasters as of late have taken the lives of thousands of people, tragedies need not be compared, but forever remembered for the successful unification of local people to assist one another during such tragedies.

Badger Basement Systems was one such member of the community that stepped up to the challenge of assisting homeowners whose livelihoods were nearly destroyed by the 2008 floods. Here's their story.

Wisconsin Flooding in 2008

Wisconsin got a lot of things in 2008 and sun was not one of them-- rain, rain and more rain. June marked the state's wettest month with severe storms from June 5 to June 12 with pervasive flooding dousing 30 of the state's 72 counties-- which Governor Jim Doyle quickly declared in a "state of emergency."

The rain was breaking all types of records in some county's climate readings with nearly 17-inches of rain in some parts. Although this may not appear to be all that high of a number, 17-inches of rain can be translated into as much as 255-inches of snow-- seeing as one inch of rain can equal about five inches of wet snow or as much as 15 inches of dry snow.

In addition, an inch of rain falling on an acre of land can yield an estimated 27,154- gallons of water weighing as much as 113 tons. In Wisconsin, there is 96.1 square miles of land. At 640 acres per mile, that's 1,670 million gallons of water falling on Wisconsin after just an inch of rainfall.

The 2008 Flood Recovery Program

A recovery program was essential following the torrential rain that had fallen during the summer months of 2008, which is why the Flood Recovery Program was instated to help as many qualified residents as possible through the provision of monetary support and other such resources.

Thus, in 2009 the Flood Recovery Program was initiated by The Wisconsin Conference of The United Methodist Church after being chosen by Wisconsin's Department of Health Services as the chief administrator of the program resources. Such resources included $6 million worth of the $15.9 million given to Wisconsin through the Federal Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) distributed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services- Administration for Children and Families, Office of Community Service.

As planned, the Block Grant resources were used to pay for residential repairs and replacements in addition to providing case management assistance to qualified residents within the 30 affected counties of Southern Wisconsin.

Badger's Response to Wisconsin Flooding
